from 'The Angel and the Mystery of the Red Tulip: Akira Uno's Story'
Page: 2/2

Enchanted soul
From far behind the quietly sleeping streets, the vibrations of morning surged forth like the roar of the sea, pushing the dawn light aside to fully reveal the earth. It was the moment when the earth wakes from its slumber and begins to stir with life.
All this time, Akira was standing at the window, staring out at the eastern sky. He had been swept away by the feeling that someone was calling to him. The calls came echoing from far away, and at the same time, from right nearby. The voice, clear and mellow, called to him repeatedly, but he did not hear it with his physical ears. It was not a physical voice, but more like a voice from inside his soul. Answering the voice, he got out of bed and fixed his gaze on the dawn sky. The sun, which had just come up, was hidden behind clouds, but even so, it tinted the eastern sky a stunning shade of red. Akira was thoroughly captivated by nature’s magnificence.
With each moment, the beautiful scene changed, as if pulsing with life. Akira forgot about his search for the owner of the voice that was calling him, and became absorbed, body and mind, in the shifting eastern sky. Just then, the beautiful crimson clouds formed the shape of a giant flower in the sky. It appeared to be a tulip, blooming bright red. What a beautiful tulip it was! Slowly, the petals of the tulip began to unfold until, right before his eyes, it had opened completely.
Unconsciously, Akira let out an exclamation of surprise. At that moment, a butterfly came flying by. Flashing its translucent wings, it seemed to fly up out of nowhere. When he looked at it closely, he saw that it was actually an angel with wings. An angel in the shape of a butterfly had emerged from the tulip that bloomed in the sky, and had been speaking to Akira for some time now. Akira wanted to understand what the angel was saying to him, so he cleared his mind and concentrated on hearing the angel’s voice. It seemed to him that this was the source of the voice that had woken him a little while earlier.
What a marvelous angel! Without realizing it, Akira had become totally mesmerized. As the sweet, mellow, almost transparent voice resonated in his heart, Akira tried hard to recall something from the distant past, but he couldn’t be sure whose voice it was. The identity of the voice floated just beyond his grasp. Just then, for some reason, Akira closed his eyes. It might have been for a minute, or maybe it was more like five minutes. When he regained awareness, the beautiful glowing clouds in the eastern sky, the red tulip that bloomed in the heavens, and the sweet, familiar angel were all gone. He couldn’t see them. A dejected Akira lingered at the window a while longer, looking for the image of the angel now firmly imprinted in his mind.
