Chapter 3: The Bears and the Whale
Page: 2/3

Q: Recently, one of our readers saw a television program about bears. The program traced the life of one little bear, showing how he lived with his mother and tried to find food. For several months, his mother left him on his own, and it became very hard for him to survive. Mostly, he just ate the leftovers of other animals’ meals. Then, as winter was approaching, the little bear’s mother returned. She helped him find the food he needed to live through the long hibernation period ahead.
One day, to everyone’s surprise, a whale that had died was carried onto the beach by the ocean, and as a result, a lot of bears were able to eat. The TV viewers could see how cute the bears looked, chewing happily on the precious, life-giving meat. Thanks to this whale, a lot of bears would survive through the winter. Not only bears, but other animals, and birds too, could eat to their hearts’ content.
The reader’s question is: How could such a wondrous thing happen? Could it be that the whale had some sort of wish to assist other animals?

A: I think this story gives us a perfect example of the way in which the laws of nature work to support the evolution of all life on earth when there is no interference from the human side. All realms of nature—animals, fish, plants, and the ocean—interact to promote the evolution of nature. In the case of the whale and the bears, the natural law acted upon the whale in a way that supported the evolution of bears and other animals. As a result, the whale’s mission in this lifetime was accomplished.
I would not say that the whale made a conscious decision to dedicate its body to the bears. She (or he) simply followed an inner directive that moved her in a certain way, supported by the movement of the ocean. The natural law of the universe is always working to enable the various species to survive, and this is truly a beautiful example of it.
Why is it that these animals have to live? It’s because they have to improve. They have to demonstrate their hidden capacities, emanating from the source of the universal law. They have to evolve. Evolution and harmony are the will of the universal law.
Let us imagine that this whale has lived a long life, and now it is time for her to die. Now, the divine law works through the ocean and naturally carries the whale’s body to the land. The universal law works in this way, in perfect harmony. Or, rather than say ‘in perfect harmony,’ I should say that the law of the universe is harmony—harmony itself. This harmonious movement is what always guides us toward further development.
