from Chapter 1: Boarding the Space Vessel

Mr. M then gave me a round instrument, approximately 15 centimeters in diameter and 7.5 centimeters thick. It was made of metal and was stored in a leather-like case. I had the impression that it was some sort of meter or gauge. The pointer needle and gradation marks were visible through a window in the case. It weighed about the same as any small testing device of that size. However, it had a luminous light at its center with multiple shining circles, each a different color. The colors were the same seven hues of a rainbow that appear when sunlight passes through a prism.
I quickly put the suit on over my shirt and trousers. It was much lighter and more comfortable than I would have expected a spacesuit to be. With the meter slung over my shoulder like a camera, I took a look at how the suit fit me. As I did so, the five cosmic persons took almost no time in slipping into their own spacesuits. Despite their serious and dignified appearance, I felt an immediate bond of trust and affection with my cosmic companions. Perhaps this is why I had not even the faintest sense of uneasiness over the prospect of taking a flight on a space vessel with them.
Clouds were now moving across the sky above Holy Hill, revealing glimpses of blue sky between them. At the southeast corner of the blue sky, a space vessel that looked about the size of a ball appeared momentarily. My mind was suddenly put on alert. The vessel descended diagonally from the south toward the east and quickly disappeared into the clouds.
Here they come! This thought, flashing through the minds of the five cosmic companions, resonated in my consciousness.
I was looking at the eastern sky, thinking that at last I might really be able to get on a space vessel. One of my cosmic friends came over and showed me how to read the gauge Mr. M had given me. He also gave me some information about the cap, shoes and suit I was wearing. The shoes were like soft sneakers and were made of a material that felt like a cross between leather and rubber. The cap seemed to be made of leather but was very light, like nylon, and fit my head perfectly.
Like putting on glasses for the first time, I now saw the world around me in clear focus. It was a marvelous place, completely different from any I had seen before. Everything looked transparent and the hills, woods, houses, and even the roads were shining.
The space suit was light brown. The jacket and trousers were connected to each other. It opened at the front, and after putting your legs in from the middle you slipped the top part over your head. It was double-layered, with something like down or floss between the layers. It was very light and extremely comfortable.
The bottoms of the trousers were fastened with strings.
The shoes were short boots and, as I mentioned earlier, were very light. As I had been instructed, I hung the small gauge over my shoulder and tried to take a few steps. Now dressed just like my cosmic friends, I could hardly wait for the vessel to arrive and pick us up.
One of my cosmic companions taught me how to read the changes in the color and positions of the light that appeared on the gauge. It occurred to me that he might be one of the persons in charge of the mechanical maintenance of the space vessel.
