Selection - How to Develop Your Spirituality, Vol. 1

from Focus on the Real You
Page: 2/3

Rejecting Divnity
Atheists and other materially-minded people say that the only things that exist are those that can be seen with the eyes, felt with the hands, or otherwise perceived through the five senses. According to them, such things as wisdom and the emotions are supplementary functions which begin to occur at birth and develop along with the physical body. Likewise, they maintain that the physical body is all there is to a human being.
They try to develop their ‘physical’ wisdom and knowledge in order to search the universe for materials that will make the world we live in as comfortable as possible. In these efforts, they completely overlook the reality that the earth and indeed the universe offer living environments to human beings, or that the union of the two sexes produces an embryo, which will be born as a baby and will continue to grow. They try to completely ignore God—the great power that holds infinite wisdom, abundance, and ability, and bestows all sorts of blessing upon human beings.
This is like the situation of a businessman who starts a company with everything he needs—including buildings, staff, and goods—being provided by investors. However, once he starts the business, the businessman completely forgets about the existence of the investors, their capital, and their various other favors. He not only neglects to pay them dividends, but even ignores their existence, and lives under the illusion that all the business has ever needed are the people who are actively involved in its operation.
This deluded businessman is in the same condition in which atheists and materialists find themselves. As far as they are concerned, life is a kind of material resource that exists separately within each physical body and serves as its individual power supply. They never give a thought to the interchange of life among people, animals, and plants, because their routine method is to deny everything that is not visible or detectable by conventional instruments.
